I spent 4 years in Iraq, Afghanistan and Africa. In the Infantry
I dont know if this guy that wrote the song has been through it or not, but our unit did this constantly. It wasnt even a metaphor
After any kind of firefight where we had to put people in the dirt, our unit magically had amazing food for us that night/next day. After weeks of moldy bread or MRES.

Tears welled up as soon as I heard the first stanza. History is a nightmare from which I'm still awakening from. Taken from James Joyce. Retired military veteran - never again will I fall for that noise. The paycheck didn't cover the regret or shame to my identity as a human being. And the benefits package all but dissolved as soon as I was used up and not fit for duty. Thanks for the memory injection these lyrics remind me of the "what the hell am I doing here" feelings before, during, and after every deployment. Brothers and fierce opponent memories that have long been suppressed. Be kind to yourself and those that are kind to you on a reciprocating basis. Much love for these lyrics and your talent Mr James. For what it's worth I substitute the word rage with vain. Fired my rifle in vain. I've tried to be proud of my service but all I can feel is shame for what I did for a paycheck. It's not easy but it actually feels good to feel again. Be sure to thank your buddy for those lyrics they hit me right in the feels and made both eyes leak.

This man is an absolute gem to this world.
Meeting him is one of the biggest highlights of my life! I suffer with really bad anxiety and depression and it took a lot for me to even show up to his concert. But when he walked through that door and joined all the people who waited months to see him definitely made it impossible to not approach him. He could clearly tell i was nervous as i could bearly get my words out but he was so polite and respectful.
I have all the respect for shawn james. Hes such a humbled person and really made me at ease while at his concert.

I was stationed there and I know we tried to help and I did have to pull the trigger and it still haunts me for the lives I had to take so this song means something to me
The part that got me was

Because I was a Gunner Mate in the Navy and when I was stationed in Afghanistan as liaison and after every patrol I was told fix any weapons that needs it and wash the the blood off them as well and get them ready for the next patrol.

Story: April 2003 Baghdad Iraq
I (me,my driver,my gunner in 1 hummer and another hummer the same) just dropped off a convoy of 100 vehicles from 4th Infantry Division 1 mile North of Baghdad at an old iraqi airforce base. They were headed to Tukrit. As we drove over a bridge to drive under it and head south on hwy 1, I see a huge smoke cloud by our on ramp. I stop the 2 hummers and I get out to see whats up. I slowly creep over to the edge of the bridge and I look over the side and I see 200 people on the on ramp im about to drive thru. The smoke was tires on fire signaling a weapons hand out. I notice an Iraqi man with an Ak47, so I take my M4 off safe and point it at him right before I shoot him, I quickly notice ALL 200 people have guns, If I shot him they would have killed us all. So I jump back in my hummer and we go the opposite way on the North bound side of the freeway. Crazy shit. As soon as I get close enough I radio in a SALUTE report.
That night I drop off another large convoy at that iraqi airforce base and drive down that onramp. No one was there! Only about 200 pools of BLOOD! yup all dead. So even tho u dont pull the trigger u still have guilt for 200 souls u had a part in ending there life.
Yes I know they were the enemy but maybe one of them was just getting a gun to protect there family. Who knows? They hont me in my dreams.
